      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2020 19 Crimes Cali Red - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>Snoop Dogg graces the label as the face of this bold red blend. The 19 Crimes blend is known for “living label” concept where a gang of historical rule breakers tell their stories of innovation. As of today, they have 11 wines and this was the only one they had at my local Trader Joe’s. This wine is a dark plum color with a bit of red-purple around the rim with good legs. On the nose, I first pick up that it’s going to have some baking spice and black fruits. It is well-balanced and full-bodied with noticeable oak right out of the gates. Because it is very jammy, I thought it was mainly zinfandel but the site says it is also Petit Syrah. Fruits notes are blackberry with a vanilla caramel, then transitions into a baked blueberry with some mild spices. It’s a long finish with an oaky sweetness that is quite enjoyable. This is a mid-range price for a Trader Joe’s wine, but I would definitely buy it again.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2018 Bodem Las Margas Garnacha - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>This wine is a bright ruby color and isn't particularly complex or interesting compared to other garnachas - it is medium bodied. On the nose, there are ripe red fruits like raspberry and cherry with a hint of strawberry; it smells sweeter than on the palette. The first sip is acidic but balanced by being smooth with a mineral texture and medium length. There are notes of sour cherry, raspberry, and fig that carries to a dry finish. I also get a hint of something vegetal mid-palette, possibly a bell pepper? I tried it day 2 after being slightly chilled and it was delightful with a bite of chocolate. Overall, this is a fine, traditional garnacha that is easy to drink. But on the upper middle price range for a TJs wine, I would buy this occasionally.</image:caption>

<image:caption>If you see this on the shelves at your local TJs, do yourself a favor and buy several bottles! It punches well above its price point, is packaged in a classy bottle, and is incredibly drinkable without being boring. This wine is 50% Cabernet Sauvignon and 50% Syrah. It's not overtly bold or complex but it is very well balanced. It is ripe fruit-forward with notes of oaky vanilla mid-palette and finishes with a refreshing splash of tart cherry. Super smooth and would make a great table red wine that goes with almost any occasion. If you like really bold cabernets but are looking for something interesting but a bit less intense, give this a try.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2019 Oxte The Silence Red Blend - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>This red blend is GSM + Cab, so some legit grapes from a warm climate. And the label is artistic and looks great on our shelf. Blackberry, plum, cherry-cola, and licorice. There are also nice spices like white pepper. It's a nice full-bodied wine with a smoothness that I really appreciate. This is the same winemaker as my last post, the La Granja Tempranillo 360 and I have to say I prefer this wine.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - NV La Granja 360 Tempranillo - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>Considering this bottle is $3.99, expectations should not be high but this Tempranillo is great for the value. What inspired me to buy it was the cute little polkadot pig on the label. There is nothing particularly memorable about this wine, but it’s reliable and easy - a great everyday drinking wine. It is dry with medium acidity and relatively soft. With notes of ripe cherry, strawberry, and raspberry. It also has finishing notes of tobacco. I wouldn’t bring this bottle as a gift, given the price tag - but as an everyday bottle with dinner, it will pair well with any grilled meat or veggie. It deserves a 4 star rating not because of thee wine, but because of the insane price for something so reliable and approachable.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2019 Laurent Dublanc Cotes-du-Rhone - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>Wine from the south of France in the Rhone Valley are grown in a Mediterranean climate means you get delicious late ripening grapes like Grenache and Syrah, which is likely what makes up this Cote-du-Rhone. Let this wine breathe after opening it, as the tannins are a bit strong right away. Once you do, you'll settle into the dark red fruits like ripe strawberries and currants. It finishes with subtle vanilla and spice. For a darker red, I considered this very easy to drink without being boring. And at the Trader Joe's price, I would easily stock up on several bottles for a weekend or weeknight!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2018 Technique Cabernet Sauvignon - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>The color of the wine is a dark, nice shade of purple deep red. Nothing on the nose is too overpowering, and I get notes of blackberry fruit leather with some plum and hints of oak spice and vanilla. It drinks pretty smooth and silky. The palate is eerily similar to the nose - blackberry fruit leather with some intermingled ripe black cherry and with a little zing of tart (cranberry?). Let this wine breathe for at least a few hours for the notes to really hit. It's a pretty dull and uninspired wine for the type of cabernets I prefer, but overall balanced and dry with only a medium finish. Overall, the price is reflective of the wine in this case, leaving me pretty disappointed and on the hunt to find a much better TJ's cabernet that is more exciting and bold.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2016 Dama D Roca Garnacha - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>The label on this wine is what originally caught my eye. This is a Trader Joes import exclusive, so you’re likely only to be able to find it at your local TJs. In addition, this Garnacha was aged in oak barrels, which is pretty rare in Garnacha at this price. And for the price of $5.99, it’s a great bottle to stock up on! On the nose, there are notes of blackberry and baking spices with hints of balsamic. On the palate, it starts with blackberry, and a mix of red berries. It has a medium finish that ends dry with notes of exactly when I had on the nose: spices and balsamic with the subtle addition of toffee and chocolate. The internet mentions notes of licorice, but I couldn’t pick that up. Drink immediately. I found that after a few days in the bottle, the toffee and chocolate notes start to dominate the fruit flavors.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2017 Las Resas Monastrell - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>This bold red was a nice find at Trader Joes that I found on sale and am glad that I did. Monastrell (also known as Mourvèdre in France) is one of the three grapes in a popular blend called GSM. It is known for it’s deep and bold characteristics and is traditionally dark red or black fruits with gamey-ness that can manifest itself as earthy or smokey. This bottle has notes of deep blackberry, violet and smokey cedar. It is a medium-long finish and not overpowering. I think this wine could fool a sophisticated wine drinker into believing you’re drinking a $40+ bottle. My only complaint is that at times, it felt a bit watery and lacked the true potential of the flavor. As mentioned, pair with any type of smoked meats/BBQ and it will perfectly compliment all of the flavors in the wine.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2019 Floriana Grüner Veltliner - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>Gruner Veltliner is a dry white wine that is most commonly from Austria. While this particular wine is from Hungray, it is pretty typical of a Gruner Veltliner - dry, acidic and balanced. I like Gruner Veltliner wine because I find affordable GV's are more consistently drinkable than an affordable sauvignon blanc. However, they are a bit more rare, so finding this at TJ's, I had to try it. This wine is well balanced and not overly aromatic or flavorful that sometimes plagues cheap white wines. It is dry and acidic but you can clearly taste the notes of lime, pineapple, and green apple. It ends with delightful hints of green peppers and freshly mowed grass. I would bring this as white wine to a daytime bbq/picnic and served with salads and light chicken or seafood dishes. Serve chilled.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2017 Poppy Pinot Noir - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>I have to be honest, I hated my first few sips of this wine. I was initially so disappointed because Trader Joe’s had specifically called this out as a really quality pinot noir for the value. However, as it opened up and I settled in, it grew on me and I ended up really enjoying and bumped this up to a 4 star. PSA: persevere through the initial sips and let it open up a bit before judgement. It is a gorgeous bright ruby and very translucent. Monterey Pinots have a reputation for their acidity and this is no exception. It is a bit on the dry side for me, but I still appreciate the balanced nature with the traditional acidity of a pinot. It's easy drinking cherry and slightly underripe strawberry, then roll into earthy mushrooms and some white pepper. I swear I got some bell pepper flavor in there too, but it was after my 2nd glass. I would put this with pizza or even non-spicy Thai food!</image:caption>

<image:title>Wine Reviews - La Ferme Julien Rose - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the first official review of a rosé. I intentionally selected this one because I believe it is one of the best everyday rosés. Also, an unconfirmed rumor is that the version of this wine with the goat on the label means that it is exclusively sold at Trader Joes! This is a Rhone-style rose and is a blend of Syrah, Grenache, and Cinsault. It is a clear, pale amber pink, almost salmon colored. On the nose, I get citrus and berry with some light floral notes. I’m a bit of a Goldilocks with Rosé: not too sweet, not too dry. And while this wine leans more dry, it’s perfectly balanced with the acidity from the tart fruit notes. Strawberry is the dominant taste, with little hints of tart raspberry. Mid-palate, I get notes of cherry and touches of minerality that are common with rosé. Perfect for a picnic!</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2018 Roustabout Meritage - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>Meritage is a red blend. A term used to describe Bordeaux-style red and must be made from at least two of the permitted grape varieties with no single variety making up more than 90 percent of the final blend. This Meritage is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (63%), Malbec (21%), Merlot (12%), Petite Verdot (4%). This is a multilayered wine, probably because it is a blend. I consider this a perfect fireside red that pairs well with any red meat. It is a deep purple color with equal notes of fruit and spices. On the palate, it is bold and dry with the perfect level of tannins. At first, I get tons of fruit leather, specifically blackberry and then settle into a chocolate covered blueberry. There are also little notes of tobacco at the tail end that helps elevate the long finish.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2018 La Sonriente Grenache - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>When we go to Trader Joes, we always buy several bottles to have on hand, because it goes with everything. In all of my Trader Joe's drinking, this is one of the best, most consistent bottles for the price. It is balanced with the perfect depth with notes of cherries and plums. The more you let it open up, I get notes of a chocolate-covered blueberry. It is from the vineyards in Calatayud in Spain and the grapes are grown in poorly gravelly soil - and it is the stress from those growing conditions that makes it subtly complex. It is a beautifully simple illustration on the bottle and looks great on the table.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - Espiral Vinho Verde - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>Get on the Vinho Verde trend! Vinho verde wines are exclusive to Portugal and means “green wine” but translates to “young grape.” Therefore, vinho verde is not a type of grape, but rather reflective of the winemaking process. Grapes are harvested slightly early and bottled and sold within 3-6 months of harvest. Vinho verdes have a fun little fizziness that comes from adding artificial carbonation. Your first sip, you’ll notice the zippy sparkles and then settle into the notes of green apple and melon. This wine is acidic by nature and very low in ABV. Serve chilled and drink right away. Meant to be consumed on a sunny day outside :)</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2018 Georges Duboeuf Beaujolais - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>This is one of our favorite light red wines. Whenever we pour it, we find that most people consider it easy to drink and refreshingly delicious as a light red. Beaujolais are made with Gamay grapes, which are an early ripening clone of Pinot Noir. It is very light and soft with barely any tannins. It's not a particularly long finish, which is what makes it so drinkable to me. This wine is tangy, exploding with cherry and strawberry with little notes of orange peel. Believe it or not, I also get a little hint of chocolate banana after my 4th or 5th sip! This producer has great illustrations on the label - classic black and white design with a pop of color from the illustration make it pop off the shelf at TJs, which is what originally inspired me to buy it. Serve slightly chilled. We've served this with seared ahi tuna. If you like red wine with your sushi, this is a great pairing.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2019 Bodega Norton Colección Malbec - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>This is a great go-to Malbec for a nice night of cooking steak at home. Malbec is a heavier red wine and this looks like a traditional one, purple-ish red in color and pigment. It is very well-balanced with smooth tannins with notes of rich plums and cherries. Due to the notes of ripe plums, this Malbec is a bit on the sweeter side, but it is not “sweet” and is still dry. It would pair well with meat (duh!) and grilled asparagus. We have had this bottle several times, and I would classify it as consistent and predictable. It is from Bodega Norton, which is a massive producer of wine in Mendoza, Argentina. We have actually been to this winery (pictures from the tour below). It is tucked into the foothills of the Andes Mountains and has been producing wine since 1895. If you keep an eye out, you are likely to find bottles from Bodega Norton all over.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Wine Reviews - 2018 Butler Pond Pinot Noir - Tasting Notes</image:title>
<image:caption>There's nothing overwhelmingly amazing about this Pinot Noir, but it is very easy to drink - no frills, bright, light and very crushable. When you pour your first glass, you’ll notice that it is a nice ruby color but very low opacity. On the nose, I got hints of cherry cola and very little of the earthy notes that come with a California Pinot Noir. Bright fruit on the palate, smooth finish, and well balanced. It is low tannin and medium acidity. Like most light pinots, I taste wild cherry, raspberry, and ripe blackberry with a pomegranate finish. I recommend letting it breathe for at least an hour. In fact, I find that coming back to it the next day makes it even more interesting. At only $6.99/bottle, we always have a bottle of Butler Pond ready to open for an evening patio night to relax after a stressful work day.</image:caption>
